RCL’s Daniel Dembry-Edwards to run TCS London Marathon in support of the National Autistic Society

On Sunday 27th April, more than 56,000 runners will take on the TCS London Marathon 2025, one of the world’s largest and most popular marathons.

Among them is Daniel Dembry-Edwards, a Senior Lecturer on Regent College London’s (RCL) LLM International Business Law programme, who is running to raise funds for the National Autistic Society, the UK’s leading autism charity supporting 700,000 individuals and their families nationwide.

We caught up with Daniel to discuss his inspiration, his love for running and why supporting this cause means so much to him.

What inspired you to take part in the London Marathon?

I have been running for about a year and a half, and completing a marathon has always been my ultimate goal – though I originally planned to do it in 2026, not this year!

I applied to run the London Marathon in support of the National Autistic Society and was initially placed on the waiting list. But just a few weeks ago, they called to offer me a spot, and I said yes immediately – before I even had time to process what it meant!

What sparked your passion for running?

After moving to a new part of London, I wanted to explore my surroundings, so I started running. I soon discovered that I lived near several parks, something I didn’t have access to in my previous neighbourhood. Running became a great way to explore and appreciate them.

Beyond that, running is almost like therapy for me. After a long day of teaching or marking, it helps me manage stress and refocus – albeit by shifting my attention to the burning in my legs!

Have you run a marathon before?

No, this will be my first! I’ve only completed a half marathon so far, and at the time, I was recovering from a knee injury. When that went well, I knew I was ready for the full distance. After the London Marathon, I’m planning to take on two more half marathons, which I’m really excited about.

Why is raising funds for the National Autistic Society important to you?

There is still a long way to go in making education fully inclusive for neurodivergent individuals. My younger brother, who is 14, is autistic, and I have seen firsthand how many schools lack the resources to properly support students like him.

Often, students are placed in programmes that don’t suit their needs, which can put them at a disadvantage. My brother can achieve anything he sets his mind to – he just needs lesson plans designed with him in mind. Education should empower all students, including those who thrive in their autism.

Do you have a goal in mind for completing the London Marathon?

My goal is simple: to finish – preferably without needing an air ambulance! A year and a half ago, I never would have imagined I could do this. When I completed my half marathon, it was an incredible feeling.

Now, knowing I am running for such a meaningful cause, I think crossing that finish line will feel even better.

As Daniel gears up for the TCS London Marathon on Sunday 27th April, the RCL community wishes him the very best of luck. If you would like to support his fundraiser, click here.
