Griffin Canning struck out a season-high eight batters as the Los Angeles Angels outlasted the visiting New York Mets series 3-2 on Sunday afternoon in Anaheim, Calif.

Canning (4-10) gave up two runs (one earned) on three hits and four walks for his first victory since June 24. The Angels took the series despite losing six of 10 on this homestand.

Jo Adell doubled and scored a run for the Angels, who were out-hit 5-4 in the win.

The Mets, trying to keep pace in the National League wild-card picture, have lost five of their last eight.

Mets veteran starter Jose Quintana (6-7) gave up three runs on three hits with four walks and four strikeouts over five innings.

New York took a 1-0 lead in the second when Harrison Bader’s single drove in Francisco Alvarez, who reached on Nolan Schanuel’s error.

The Angels flipped the lead in the bottom of the second when Taylor Ward came across on a wild pitch and Matt Thaiss’ sacrifice fly scored Adell.

Zach Neto led off the third with his first MLB triple and scored on Kevin Pillar’s sacrifice fly for a 3-1 Angels lead.

The Mets cut the margin to 3-2 in the fifth when Francisco Lindor singled home Jeff McNeil before Canning wriggled out of trouble.

New York had runners on first and third with one out in the top of the eighth, but Angels reliever Mike Baumann got Mark Vientos to chop into an inning-ending double play started by Neto at shortstop.

Jose Marte, Baumann and Roansy Contreras combined for four innings of scoreless relief as Contreras notched his second save of the season.

The Mets took the opener 5-1 on Friday before the Angels rallied for a 5-4 victory Saturday.
