Regent College London (RCL) is delighted to announce the appointment of Professor Ernest Caldwell as our new Provost.
With over two decades of experience in higher education, Professor Caldwell brings expertise in curriculum reform, institutional design, executive leadership, and developing domestic and international partnerships. As a senior academic, his research focuses on Chinese law and legal history, with extensive publications on early Chinese legal manuscripts and modern constitutional history.
Professor Caldwell will work closely with Rebecca Yates, who joined RCL as Dean of Faculty in June 2024 and has recently been appointed as Deputy Provost. Rebecca is a highly experienced academic leader with a strong track record of successfully implementing large-scale change initiatives and achieving outstanding student outcomes. We are confident that Ernest and Rebecca will leverage their combined expertise to deliver impactful initiatives in the months ahead.
Academic leadership
Professor Caldwell has a distinguished academic background. He served at SOAS University of London for 11 years in the departments of Law and East Asian Studies, while also holding various senior leadership roles.
Most recently, Professor Caldwell held the position of Pro-Warden (DVC) Education and Student Experience at Goldsmiths, University of London, where he oversaw strategic initiatives in portfolio management, registry operations, quality assurance, learning technology and international partnerships. He is also co-investigator on the major AHRC-funded research project at SOAS, titled Han Dynasty Phonology: When Chinese Became Chinese.
Advancing RCL’s academic vision
In his new role as Provost, Professor Caldwell will spearhead initiatives to enhance RCL’s academic strategy, focusing on improving the quality of provision to promote student-centred learning and interdisciplinary collaboration. He aims to foster a culture of innovation and inclusivity, promoting partnerships with relevant industries and advancing the College’s reputation as a leader in flexible, accessible higher education.

Professor Caldwell’s extensive experience in curriculum enhancement, partnership development and student experience management aligns perfectly with RCL’s growth plans, which include expanding course offerings and strengthening the College’s presence in London and internationally.
His leadership will be pivotal as the College works towards meeting the evolving needs of students and achieving its ambitious goal of gaining university status by 2033. Professor Caldwell’s appointment signals a commitment to driving the institution forward, ensuring RCL remains at the forefront of higher education and ready to attain university status within the next decade.
